Barnum's museum was so interesting that people would spend a lot of time in it. This caused a problem because the museum would fill up and no more paying customers could get in. To solve this problem, it appears that Barnum had signs put up saying, "To the Egress". People would follow the signs and eventually go through a door which lead to the outside. This is because "Egress" is a fancy word for "Exit"
